Tooth extractions are a common dental procedure that can make a world of difference in your long-term dental health. However, proper care afterward is crucial to ensure a smooth recovery. Here’s a guide to help you heal effectively after a tooth extraction.
Immediately after your extraction, your dentist will place gauze over the site to control bleeding. Bite down gently and keep the gauze in place for at least 30 minutes to promote clot formation. After 30+ minutes, remove the gauze and assess the bleeding. If the site is still bleeding, replace it with clean gauze for another 30 minutes.
Take it easy for the first 24 hours. Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise, as increased blood pressure can disrupt healing. Kick back, relax, and let your mouth begin the healing process.
For the first few days, eat soft, cool foods like yogurt, applesauce, and mashed potatoes. These don’t require much chewing, so they will be easier to consume. Avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods that could irritate the extraction site.
Suction from drinking through a straw or smoking can dislodge the blood clot, leading to a painful condition called dry socket. Stick to drinking from a glass and avoid smoking for at least 72 hours.
Rinse gently with warm salt water starting 24 hours after the extraction. Avoid vigorous rinsing or spitting. Brush your teeth carefully, steering clear of the extraction site.
